It’s a brilliant trade to get into which is why our website strives to help people with their plastering. We provide “how to” articles, videos and even e-books.
However, some people need more. Some people don’t know where to start and believe that plastering courses are the only way to go. If this is you make sure to read this entire article because we have everything you need.
This article will help you find some options for your plastering. We’ll cover 3 main subject
- Beginners plastering course
- Online plastering courses
- Traditional plastering courses.
We’re going to delve into each area so that you have options. This is what it’s all about – having different options so that you can choose to learn to plaster in YOUR OWN WAY.
However, before we get into it, you need to realise why you’re doing it in the first place. This affects everything:
Why Do You Want To Learn How To Plaster
This is the big question and it usually comes under 2 categories:
- Renovation/ home improvement
- Career change/
These are the 2 main reasons we find people looking for plastering courses. We find people looking for a complete career change usually aim for the full intensive plastering courses, ideal for learning all aspects of plastering.
There’s also the weekend plastering courses which is designed to give you a brief understanding of the world of plastering. This is usually aimed at people who want to improve or develop their own homes.
Or maybe for the people who don’t quite know if plastering is for them. They usually want something that isn’t as “full on”.
No matter which avenue you’re starting at we always recommend to everyone to learn the basics of plastering first. This gives you the confidence to move on and sometimes even gives you the ability to learn to plaster WITHOUT any formal training.
So here’s what we recommend:
Whats The Beginners Plastering Course
This is something we offer at Plastering For Beginners and this course is completely free. I bet you’re wondering how and why it’s free – surely it’s a con?
Well no…
It’s an online based training course that covers the 3 main components of plastering. We’ll show you:
- The 7 steps to plastering a wall – This is a training video that outlines the exact process I use to plaster a wall. Some people don’t even know there are 7 stages? You just put the plaster on and that’s that (I wish it was that easy)! We’ll show you the Entire process to plastering in a video format so you can see it all.
- The Perfect Mix – We’ll show you which plaster to use and show you how to get the perfect mix ready for plastering. This always trips people up but you don’t have to worry because we’ll provide all the answers for you
- The Tools You’ll Need For The Job – The final part of the puzzle is knowing which tools to buy. We’ll highlight every tool you’ll need for plastering and show you the ones we recommend.
These are the 3 things we cover in the beginners plastering course and because it’s online based, we can offer it for free. This gives you an understanding of how plastering works and shows you how to plaster your own wall.
Learn Plastering From Home
We have students who have completely learnt the art of plastering without any formal education. We’ve had a lady who was an ex-schoolteacher who learnt to plaster her own home through our training. We’ve also had an ex Postman who wanted a career change who’s now working full time as a plasterer.
This all started from our welcome course and they had no formal training!
It also gives you a brief understanding before you start an intensive plastering course. We’ve had some students who were nervous about starting but our online training helped them gain a bit of confidence before they signed up to formal plastering school.
So here’s what we recommend to anyone thinking about attending a plastering course. If you’d like to access this free training then feel welcome to sign up using the form below.
Next we have the online plastering course
Online Plastering Courses
This is a full training course which covers every aspect of tradition plastering. From preparing your walls for plastering to plastering onto corner beads, this course covers every angle. We offer a full solution to learning plastering.
This is ideal for people looking to learn the entire process of plastering, from start to finish, without attending any formal plastering courses. These courses can intimidate certain people and others just want to plaster their own homes.
That’s’ why we’ve made this course available as an online training course. If you’re curious about how this plastering course works then you can watch the video below.
It’s called The Plasterers Blueprint. I’ll walk you through the whole course and explain what we offer. The video is below:

Now its time for your tradition plastering courses
Traditional Plastering Courses
This is for the people who have no options but to learn from home. Likewise, this option is ideal for anyone looking for qualifications and searching for a deeper understanding of the theory of plastering. There are courses like this all over the UK.
There are many categories for this and lots of plastering schools offer different options for every scenario. We’re going to start with the 1 – 10-day options and walk right through to the more intensive course where you receive a full qualification on completion.
1 – 10-Day Plastering Course (No Qualifications)
You have the weekend plastering courses which gives you a basic understanding of plastering. By the end of the weekend, you would have tried plastering a few walls and potentially a ceiling depending on which company you’re going to.
You can also attend a 1-day plastering course but to be honest, I actually advise against this option. You need time to learn using a Trowel and Hawk and it takes longer than a day. 2 days, in my opinion, is the bare minimum.
There are options for 5 and 10-day courses. You’ll obviously learn a lot more during this time and if you can afford it, this is what I think is the best option. You learn how to plaster and even learn the basics of rendering.
You’ll also have a deeper understanding to plastering and learn more than just using finish plaster. This is ideal for anyone wanting to walk away with confidence in plastering a room.
However, some people want more than experience. Others want to take this as a full-time occupation so qualifications seem like a good option. I’ve been a full-time plasterer for 11 years working all over the world so it’s not necessary but I must admit, it does open more doors having NVQ’s / City & Guild qualifications.
Advanced Plastering Courses (With Qualifications)
This usually starts from 3 weeks and travels all the way to an 8-week course if your outside of the usual college approach. Depending on the length, you’ll grades will increase and with it the amount you’ll learn.
There’s 2 main types of qualifications:
- NVQ’s
- City & Guilds
Out of the two options, the City & Guilds is the most reputable for plastering. It is a very respected course and in terms of training, it’s the best you can get. However, it does come at a cost.
They do tend to be a bit more expensive than the NVQ’s but you get what you pay for. The training is deep and you’ll learn a lot. NVQ’s are still great but the City & Guilds diploma holds more weight.
Here’s a few schools that offer these diplomas:
What you’ll learn varies massively depending on how long the course is and how much you’re willing to put in. With that said, as long as your serious about plastering you can learn the traditional way or online. It’s all due to your willingness to learn and obviously your financial situation.
