What You’ll Need
Before we get started, gather these essentials:
- Mixing Bucket: Choose a sturdy bucket large enough to handle the job.
- Clean Water: Fresh and clean, the quality of your water matters.
- Plaster: We recommend Thistle Multi-Finish plaster for its versatility across various surfaces.
- Mixer: We’ll discuss the best options for this shortly.
Getting the Measurements Right
Precision is key when mixing plaster. For British standards, a bag of Multi-Finish plaster typically needs 11 to 11.5 litres of water. However, for optimal results, use 12.5 litres of water per bag. Why 12.5 litres? This amount strikes the perfect balance—too much water makes the mix runny, while too little makes it too thick. So, stick to 12.5 litres for the best consistency.
Choosing the Right Mixer
Your choice of mixer can make a big difference:
- Combi Drill with Mixer Attachment: A popular choice among DIY enthusiasts. It’s versatile and gets the job done.
- Refina Mega Mixer: A high-end option that’s effective but on the pricier side.
- VonHaus Mixer: Reliable and cost-effective. I’ve been using mine for nine years, and it’s still going strong. It handles various plaster types, including undercoat, topcoat, and sand and cement mixes.
If you’re new to plastering, you don’t need to splurge on a top-of-the-line mixer. Avoid mixing by hand or with a stick; it’s a time-consuming process and won’t yield the smooth consistency you need. A budget-friendly mixer from B&Q for around £20 should suffice. A drill with a mixer attachment will provide a better result and save you time.
How to Mix Plaster Perfectly
Here’s a step-by-step guide to mixing your plaster:
- Add Water: Pour 12.5 litres of clean water into your mixing bucket. This is the foundation of your plaster mix.
- Add Plaster: Wear a mask for safety. Start by adding half a bag of plaster to the water. Avoid dumping the entire bag in at once; it tends to clump at the bottom and creates uneven sections. Mix the first half thoroughly before adding the rest.
- Mixing: Use your mixer to blend the plaster and water on full power. Continue until the mixture is smooth and consistent. Make sure to break up any edges and ensure the plaster is fully combined.
- Final Touches: Once mixed, clean off any plaster from the bucket and ensure the mixture has a creamy consistency, similar to Angel Delight. This will make for a smooth application.
